The grinding process is a material removal and surface generation technique used to shape and finish components made of metals and other materials. It involves using a rotating abrasive wheel as a cutting tool. The wheel, which contains abrasive particles, acts like a myriad of sharp cutting edges, shaving off layers of material to achieve the desired form and finish1. Compared to other machining methods like turning or milling, grinding can provide precision and surface finishes up to ten times better.

1. Abrasive Grains: The grinding wheel consists of abrasive grains held together in a binder. These abrasive grains act as cutting tools, removing tiny chips of material from the workpiece.

2. Material Removal: During grinding, the rotating abrasive wheel interacts with the work surface, removing material. It's commonly used to:
Shape components made of metals and other materials.
Achieve precise dimensions and smooth finishes.
Remove burrs from the surface of the workpiece.

3. Types of Grinding Machines:
Portable Power Tools: Examples include angle grinders, die grinders, and cut-off saws.
Stationary Power Tools: These include bench grinders and cut-off saws.
Creep-Feed Grinding (CFG): A specialized process for high material removal rates, competing with milling and turning. CFG can remove material up to 6 mm deep and provides improved surface finishes.
