What are the differences between single and double quotes in Bash?
Interpolation (Variable Expansion):
Double Quotes (""): Variables and special characters within double quotes are expanded, meaning variable values are substituted into the string. For example, echo "Hello, $NAME" will print the value of the variable NAME.
Single Quotes (''): Variables and most special characters within single quotes are treated literally. They do not undergo expansion. For instance, echo 'Hello, $NAME' will print $NAME as is, not substituting the value of the variable.
Escape Sequences:
Double Quotes (""): Some escape sequences, like \n for a newline or \t for a tab, are honored within double quotes. For instance, echo -e "First line\nSecond line" will print two lines.
Single Quotes (''): Most escape sequences are treated literally within single quotes. For example, echo -e 'First line\nSecond line' will print the escape sequence \n as text, not as a newline.
Command Substitution:
Double Quotes (""): Allow command substitution using backticks (`) or $(...). For example, echo "Today is $(date)" will include the output of the date command in the string.
Single Quotes (''): Commands enclosed in single quotes are treated as literal strings and not evaluated or substituted. For instance, echo 'Today is $(date)' will print $(date) as text.
