Microsoft Makecode Robots V2
This video is about the software on-line IDE (Integrated Development Environment) "Microsoft Makecode Robots".
The robots support is an extension to the popular STEM education tool Microsoft Makecode. This supports the computer microbit and a number of robots using this computer.
I only discovered this tool two weeks ago and I have had lots of fun exploring it. I definitely recommend it for STEM Education and STEM Clubs.
What is special about it is that it provides two very important features for more complex software:
a robot simulator
debugging with single step execution
So with this software you not only get a simulator for the microbit but you also get a simulator for the robot and it performs on a robot mat and follows the black line on this mat. I have not included obstacle detection in my desktop demo.
A number of microbit kits are supported but I only got it to work with the Kittenbot RobotBit. I made my own mechanical design and construction for this microbit shield using Lego components. I had to explore Microsoft's github web page to see where the line follower sensors were mapped to microbit's pins and also which motors were used.
After a number of trials and tuning the motor timing for each event I got it to work but I had to invert the logic for the line follower sensors.
The debugging tool is an extra feature and I missed this on the standard version of Makecode.
I have not yet tested the software with DFRobot Maqueen V3 but only V2 is officially supported.
