Take your lifeline skills one step further and learn how to place it through the common 2-stitch decrease sk2p or sl1, k2tog, psso.

If you want to knit a swatch and test the method with me:
Using a DK weight yarn and 2 - US 6 (4 mm) DPNs, cast on 23 sts using the long tail cast on method. Do not join to work in the round.
Knit 3 rows (garter edging).
Row 1 (RS): Knit.
Row 2 (WS): K3, p17, k3.
Row 3: Knit.
Row 4: K3, p17, k3.
Row 5: K6, sl1, k2tog, psso, k5, sl1, k2tog, psso, k6. [19 sts rem]
Row 6: K3, p13, k3.
Row 7: Knit.
Row 8: K3, p13, k3.
Place the lifeline on Row 5 through the decrease stitches and rip back to make sure you picked up all of the stitches in the correct orientation!
