Ligands
Ions or molecules that are attached to the central atom or ion of a coordination compound. Ligands can be simple ions or molecules, like -Cl, -NH3, or -CN, or larger molecules, like ethane-1,2-diamine (-NH2-(CH2)2-NH2-).
Coordination number
The number of ligand donor atoms that a metal ion is directly bonded to.
Coordination sphere

Coordination polyhedron
The geometric pattern or spatial arrangement of the ligands directly attached to the central atom or ion.
Central atom
The metal atom to which all the ions or clusters are attached in the complex compound.

When the central metal atom is surrounded by ligands or ions and forms a complex.
Oxidation number
The charge associated with the central atom when all of the electron pairs provided by the ligands are removed.
