In this video, I test whether it's true that "language speed doesn't matter" and that a Python web service supposedly works the same as a Rust one because "it all comes down to I/O."
What the video is about
I built two identical services:
Python: FastAPI + asyncpg + uvicorn (20 workers)
Rust: Axum + deadpool-postgres
Both versions have two handles: /hello (no database) and /orders (SELECT ... LIMIT/OFFSET for Postgres). Measuring with wrk
Stack
Python: FastAPI, asyncpg
Rust: Axum, deadpool-postgres, tracing
DB: PostgreSQL
Bench: wrk, jq, diff
00:00 Intro: "Speed doesn't matter?"
02:15 Python Service Overview (FastAPI + asyncpg)
04:10 Rust Service Overview (Axum + deadpool-postgres)
06:10 Comparing Service Responses
08:44 /hello Benchmark (without DB)
11:00 /orders Benchmark in Python
11:54 /orders Benchmark in Rust
13:18 Prepared-statement cache in Rust
14:59 Summary: How many pods and how much does it cost?
16:57 When to use Rust, and when Python
rust vs. Python, rust web performance, fastapi vs. axum, asyncpg, deadpool-postgres, postgres performance, rps benchmark, uvicorn workers, prepared statement cache, high-performance backend, blazing fast rust
