In the context of APIs, the word Application refers to any software with a distinct function. The interface can be thought of as a contract of service between two applications. This contract defines how the two communicate with each other using requests and responses. An application programming interface is a way for two or more computer programs to communicate with each other. It is a type of software interface, that offers a service to other pieces of software. A document or standard that describes how to build or use such a connection or interface is called an API specification.
