The lecture is the beginning of an effort to add a custom backend to a frontend application that uses the Reactjs library.

You get shown a wireframe of what the frontend application looks like: a chat room box.

You get shown the tools that are going to be used in the development.

NPM is then used to install the code for the express library.

Then a basic HTTP server is made with no endpoints.
