Before starting, it takes time to set up Google Cloud with non-commercial and educational purposes only in your Google accounts. Don’t forget to set up free-of charge at the beginning of learning Google Earth Engine.
I want to introduce open data or open educational resources OER titled Cloud-Based Remote Sensing with Google Earth Engine [1] which was published in 2022, through Springer publishing, and edited by Jeffrey Cardille and Morgan Crowley from McGill University, as well as David Saah and Nicholas Clinton from University of San Francisco and Google, respectively. There are numerous contributors to collaborate over 50 chapters, covering a variety of topics with JavaScript and Google Earth Engine API source codes from real-world examples. This book is open access so that readers have free access to use the course materials.
First part of this OER introduces Programming and fundamentals of Remote Sensing, Next part presents Interpretation and image processing, as well as Vector and tables, Advanced Topics such as combining R and Earth Engine - Human Hydrological and Terrestrial Applications. The total pages are over 1200 pages. Take a look at your preferred topic of remote sensing or geomatics with Google Earth Engine. The line by line guidance and source codes of JavaScript and GEE API available in each chapter.
Perhaps, it would be slightly unfamiliar with Google Earth Engine UI. There are Scripts and Docs on the left side of panels. You can create a new file or new repository and delete the file. You can see a script code under Scripts tap while you could see a number of functions or methods under Docs. In the main window, you are able to write down the source code. You can Save and Run your source code, checking a result under console tap in the right side of the panel.
You could follow the guidance of the first part of this OER, including variables and print functions. There are examples to define a type of variable including strings and numbers in Google Earth Engines. Take a look at these examples as well.
You could use a shortcut with Ctrl + / forward slash on Windows to comment or uncomment multiple lines at the same time.
If you want to display your selection on the google map as below, you can use the Map.addLayer function. It’s an example of colour composite images from Landsat 8 collections with True colour with Bands 4 3 and 2 while false colour composite between band 5 and band 3.
If you want to explore Landsat 8 satellite images in your region of interest, using ee.ImageCollection as an example. The arguments of this function explain it should be string, and in this case it can be the format of directory or folder.
You could add the book’s code repository to the Code Editor by inputting
https://code.earthengine.google.com/?... jects/gee-edu/book displayed on the top of page 43 in the book. Then click Add.
Go to Examples dropdown arrow. Let’s navigate your preference. Image Collection then Linear Fit. You could modify and adjust this source code for your purpose. Take time to navigate your preferences under an open educational resource, this open access book or Google Earth Example on the code editor in Google Earth Engine [2].
