HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol) and HTTPS (Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure) are both protocols used for communication over computer networks, particularly the internet. The main difference between the two lies in the level of security provided.

HTTP:
HTTP is the foundation of data communication for the World Wide Web. It is a protocol that defines how messages are formatted and transmitted, and how web browsers and web servers communicate with each other. HTTP operates over a network connection and uses a client-server model. It is a stateless protocol, meaning each request and response are independent of each other.

The main characteristics of HTTP include:

Lack of Encryption: HTTP does not provide any inherent encryption for the data transmitted between the client and the server. This means that the data is sent in plain text, and it can be intercepted and read by anyone with access to the network.

Port 80: HTTP typically uses port 80 for communication.

HTTPS:
HTTPS is an extension of HTTP that adds an extra layer of security through encryption. It uses SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) or TLS (Transport Layer Security) protocols to establish a secure connection between the client and the server. This encryption ensures that the data transmitted between the two parties is encrypted and cannot be easily intercepted or tampered with.

The main characteristics of HTTPS include:

Encryption: HTTPS uses encryption algorithms to secure the data being transmitted. This ensures that even if someone intercepts the data, they won't be able to read or modify it without the proper decryption keys.

Port 443: HTTPS typically uses port 443 for communication.

Certificate-based Authentication: HTTPS uses digital certificates to verify the authenticity of the website and establish a secure connection. These certificates are issued by trusted third-party certificate authorities (CAs) and are used to encrypt the data and validate the identity of the server.

In summary, the key difference between HTTP and HTTPS is the level of security. HTTP transmits data in plain text, while HTTPS encrypts the data to protect it from unauthorized access or tampering. It is recommended to use HTTPS whenever sensitive information, such as passwords or financial details, is being transmitted over the internet.
