Richard Kim, M.D., of Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian in Newport Beach, California, discusses the vital role of advanced brain mapping to assist the surgeon during brain surgery. Dr. Kim explains how important it is for the surgeon to pinpoint exactly where structures in the brain are located, in order to avoid damaging centers responsible for motor skills or speech functions. Mapping the human brain will help surgeons to avoid accidentally permanently damaging crucial sections of the brain. As this sort of technology improves, patients can expect much higher brain surgery successes without future complications in other parts of their lives.
