For Advanced Users:
Most of the time recording in 120 degrees is best (especially for bird calls) however, if you wish to record a sound from a single source (like a person talking, or if you know exactly where the bird is) then the 90 degrees shotgun setting will give you the best results. Physically turn the actual microphones until it snaps to the '90' setting. Then point the ZOOM recorder directly at the source as it will now only capture audio from the tips of the microphones. But be aware this will filter out all sounds coming from the sides so generally the '120' is best.
