Event Driven DevOps Automation and Workflows, LinkedIn and StackStorm
Greetings everybody!
For our 10th meetup, we are excited to welcome key author of Nurse, Brian Sherwin, from LinkedIn where he will share Nurse and the design decisions they have made and the adoption levels at LinkedIn. In addition, Dmitri Zimine, who is co-founder of the workflow based StackStorm will put into context the recent resurgence of event driven DevOps automation and workflows.
Abstract:
Recently there has been a resurgence of interest in projects that tie together environments with the aid of imperative workflows. Such projects range from Facebook's FBAR to LinkedIn's Nurse to Pintrest's Pinball to Spotify's Luigi and StackStorm's workflow based solution.
In this meet-up we welcome the key author of Nurse, Brian Sherwin, from LinkedIn where he will share Nurse and the design decisions they have made and the adoption levels at LinkedIn. In addition, Dmitri Zimine, who is co-founder of the workflow based StackStorm will put into context the recent resurgence of event driven DevOps automation and workflows.
Some questions sure to arise: When imperative, when declarative? Does imperative mean you cannot embrace infrastructure as code for your automation? How do you avoid the dreaded infinite loop? How about flapping What went wrong with run book automation and how are we avoiding that fate today?

Brian Sherwin (@briancorsherwin) is a Site Reliability Engineer at LinkedIn as well as the project lead of the Nurse auto remediation system. His background includes network automation and management roles at Walmart and other large scale, mission critical environments.
Dmitri Zimine (@dzimine) is CTO and co-founder of StackStorm as well as being a driver of the Mistral open source workflow as a service project. His experience includes helping create the run book automation space while leading engineering at Opalis and more recently leading development teams in the vSphere organization at VMware.
