In the last video, we talked about SMP – Symmetric Parallelism. Now, let’s see what is MPP – Massively parallel processing.

In a massively parallel processing system, multiple computers are housed in the same chassis. All these computers are interconnected and they communicate to each other. Unlike SMP system in which multiple CPUs share a common memory, disk space and I/O, In MPP system, each computer has its own memory, disk space and I/O. Also, each computer has its own operating system. Hence, MPP system is also called as “loosely coupled” or “Shared Nothing” system. However, all the computers in the MPP system make use of one common file system so that program files can be installed in a single place instead of installing the program in individual computers in the system.

Since, each processing node (computers) has its own resources, the performance of the MPP system is way better than SMP system. To scale the MPP system, more number of computers can be added.
