Tonight we'll solve three random problems from the database that are unique and challenging in their own way.
1. Tricky Current Problem (for more currents see my YouTube series about Navigation General Sample Exam). You will transit the Cape Cod Canal on 7 November 1983. If you arrive at the Railroad Bridge at 1655 EST (ZD +5), for what period of time during your transit will you have currents of not more than 0.5 knot?
Answer: 1648-1702
2. Star Selection Problem with Planets. On 2 February 1981, your 0400 Zone Time DR position is 24-14N, 163-28W. Considering their magnitude, azimuth, and altitude, which group includes the three bodies best suited for a fix at star time?
a) Saturn, Antares, Regulus - correct
b) Jupiter, Saturn, Polaris
c) Saturn, Polaris, Zubenelgenubi
d) Jupiter, Spica, Denebola
3. Amplitude of the Moon not on the Celestial Horizon. At 1430 ZT on 16 April, in DR position 34-03.8N, 61-02.5W, you observe an amplitude of the Moon. The center of the Moon is on the visible horizon, and it bears 095.2psc. The variation is 12W. What is the deviation?
Answer: 2.1E
