This is the Flo Patch; a non-invasive way to help you assess if your hypotensive patient is going to be fluid/preload responsive!
This technology can be used in the ED, on rapid response patients & the ICU.
The patch is placed on the carotid artery & it connects via Bluetooth to the unit’s device (an iPad in this case!)
The device will then calculate the carotid corrected flow time.
After a baseline is established, a passive leg raise test (PLR) or a RAPID fluid challenge can be performed. Then, the carotid corrected flow time will be reassessed.
If the carotid corrected flow time ⬆️ by 7 milliseconds or more, that is equivalent to a 10% ⬆️ in stroke volume, which indicates the patient will be fluid-responsive.
This is not for all patients. I wouldn’t use this in a patient with carotid disease or stenosis of 70% or more. (you could try the other carotid!)
Another case where I wouldn’t use this is in a patient with severe aortic stenosis.
