The data link layer is the second layer of the OSI (Open Systems Interconnection) model and the TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) protocol suite. It is responsible for transmitting data between adjacent network nodes over a physical communication link, such as Ethernet or Wi-Fi.
The data link layer has two main functions:
1. Framing: It breaks down the data received from the network layer into frames that can be transmitted over the physical medium. Each frame contains a header, which includes information such as the source and destination addresses, and a trailer, which includes error checking information.
2. Media Access Control (MAC): It controls access to the physical medium, so that multiple devices can communicate without interfering with each other. The MAC layer determines when a device can transmit data over the medium, and also handles collision detection and resolution.
The data link layer is divided into two sub-layers: the Logical Link Control (LLC) and the MAC sub-layer. The LLC provides services to the network layer and is responsible for error checking and flow control, while the MAC sub-layer provides services to the physical layer and handles the transmission of frames over the physical medium.
Examples of data link layer protocols include Ethernet, Wi-Fi, and Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP).
