Let’s talk about open vs closed root-finding methods in numerical methods. To solve a non-linear equation means to find the roots of the function. To find these roots we can either us an open root-finding method or a closed root-finding method. An open root-finding method uses an initial guess for where we think the root may be located whereas in closed root-finding methods we bound the root between an upper and a lower boundary and then close in on our root as we iterate the chosen algorithm.
