Testing a New Shape
Here’s a short video that shows how these sculptural pieces are trimmed, like you may have seen posted earlier this week on my feed.
There’s lots of ways of making vessels like this, you could throw two pieces, trim them, and then fit them together, they could be slip-cast or hand-built, but when it comes to making objects like this, or the chalices you might have seen me creating recently, I prefer to throw them as one piece and then trim them back. There’s less chances for joins to crack, for attached components to bend or warp, and as I adore the trimming process perhaps more than anything else, I relish in all the finicky turning, apart from maybe hollowing out the undersides, as it’s so easy to make a mistake and rip a hole through the pot.
These little ones are tests more than anything, paperweights, sculptural objects to live with, to hold and they’re going to change A LOT once fired as the sharp, highly refined shape will be softened with the glass that coats it. I can’t wait to see what they look like, and if they work, I plan on scaling these up, throwing large ‘blanks’ of stoneware that I’ll trim within an inch of their lives.
