I worked in a sawmill for years … I can answer what does a machine operator do.
I worked on 3 different machines…
Forklift Operator – moving merchandise to different areas
Bobcat Driver – moving sawdust piles around
Main Drop Sort Operator – redirect lumber back for re-cut or to prepare for shipping
There are usually a number of different types of machine operators in most operations.
Training is typically made available as long as you’ve had some experience in some type of machine.
It was an okay job and I made a decent living.
I was pretty nervous about the number of injuries that happened.
Also had to deal with union strikes a couple of times. That was one of the reasons I decided to switch jobs.
Since then a lot of mills have closed in my part of the country so there are a lot fewer jobs in that industry.
I found something that is a lot safer, a lot more fun and where I can make a lot more money.
I’ve done different things throughout the years, but this by far is the coolest work I’ve ever done.
