Great for vocals and guitars, serial compression is a way of making the compressor work for you - the way you want, to give you back audio that is both controlled enough to fit into a balanced mix and yet still dynamic enough to make the air move. In this video I work with 4:1 compression ratios which are relatively high in my view, but I believe you can definitely get away with doing that when you use serial compression, as it tapers down the audio without it sounding like it's been hit with a whole heap of compression. In actual fact it's not -- well not all the time -- as is the case with a single compressor. In serial compression, the first compressor does all the necessary work, but only on the loudest parts, and it doesn't let anything too big past that will hit the next compressor too hard down the line. The second compressor is there further rounding off any harsh edges of the sound and the result is a smoother sounding finish.
Supplementary Info:
*Remember that you have all the compression settings at your disposal, for example: The Gain control
This technique also works quite well when you replace the first compressor with a high ratio limiter, although I prefer 2 compressors for most situations.
Experiment with different attack and release times, but I think that the ones in this video are a good starting point.
