Google Docs introduces notifications for document changes.

You can now select specific files in Google Docs to receive email notifications about document changes. The change notification email contains information about the change, such as when, who made the change, and what kind of change was made. These notifications let you track changes and comments throughout your document. You can also track collaboration more easily by specifying the specific comments and changes you want to be notified about.

These notifications are fully configurable in both Gmail and Google Docs. In Gmail, use the new Notification Preferences dropdown menu that appears in new notification emails. Similarly, in Google Docs, use the Notification Preferences dropdown menu (bell icon) to open a dialog box with additional customizable options.

There is no Google Workspace admin control over this feature. This feature began rolling out to Rapid Release domains yesterday, and will start rolling out to Scheduled Release domains on August 17th. However, both release tracks will roll out gradually over a period of up to 15 days, and the feature will be available to all Google Workspace tiers and his personal Google account.

Edit notifications are disabled by default and must be enabled for individual documents. Once enabled, you will be notified whenever someone adds or removes something from the specified Google Doc. This feature was previously only available in Google Sheets and the notification email wasn't very detailed, so this is definitely a step in the right direction.

Manage your notifications

You can change how often you receive email notifications for comments in Google Docs, Drawings, Sheets, or Slides. In Google Docs and Sheets, you can also change notification settings for edits. You can choose whether to receive notifications through email or on your browser.
Important: Changes to notification settings will only apply to the file you’re on.

Manage notifications for comments

On your computer, open a document, drawing, spreadsheet, or presentation.

You can either:

Go to Tools and then Notification settings.

In the top right corner of the file, click Open comment history Comment and then click Notification settings .

Under “Comments,” choose when you want to receive notifications:

All comments: You'll be notified about all new comments.

Comments for you: You'll be notified about @mentions and threads involving you.

None: Never receive emails about comments for that file.

Tip: You can also change your notification settings directly from the email notifications. When you receive an email notification for comments, click Notification settings within the email. Next to “Comments,” you can update your preferences for that file.

Manage notifications for edits

On files in Google Docs and Sheets, you can change settings to get notifications when others make changes.

In Google Docs

You won’t get notifications when you make changes on your doc, but you’ll get notifications when anyone adds or removes content.

On your computer, open a Google Doc.

You can either:

Go to Tools and then Notification settings.

In the top right corner of the file, click Open comment history Comment and then click Notification settings .

Under “Edits,” choose when you want to receive notifications:

Added or removed content: You'll be notified whenever anyone adds or removes content in that file.

None: Never receive emails about edits for that file.

Tips:

You can also change your notification settings directly from the email notifications. When you receive an email notification for comments or edits, click Notification settings within the email. Next to “Edits,” you can update your preferences for that file.

If there are too many edits or the document is too large, email notifications may not display all the changes. To find all of them, open the document.
