Rapid Resolve - The Patch Replacer Effect
You have a clip of video that you like, but, at some point in the clip, there is an object that you want to remove from the shot. DaVinci Resolve has several effects and tools to help you accomplish this including:
Using node sizing with a Power Window (can be done in either the free or studio version of Resolve)
Using The Object Removal effect (DaVinci Resolve Studio)
Using the Patch Replacer effect (DaVinci Resolve Studio)
In this tutorial, we will use the Patch Replacer effect.
1. From the Edit or Cut page, add the clip to the timeline.
2. Select the clip and go to the Color page.
3. Once you open the Color page, make sure that the clip is still selected.
With node-based editing, treat each node as if it is a single thought. In other words, don’t do everything that you want to do in a single node. If you have a lot of changes or corrections to do, it can make it difficult to determine where you did what. So the first thing we will do, is add a label to our node.
4. With the node selected, do one of two things:
Control-click on the node - Node Label
Or...
Color - Nodes - Label Selected Node (note that there is no default keyboard shortcut for labeling a node)
Call this node Original.
5. We will now add another serial node by one of three methods:
Color - Nodes - Add Serial Node
Or…
Control-click on the original node - Add Node - Add Serial
Or…
Option or Alt S.
Whichever way your chose, a new node appears. We need to label this node as well.
6. Follow the steps above to label this node PATCH.
7. Open the Effects panel (top-right corner of the interface).
8. The Patch Replacer effect lives in the Resolve FX Revival category. We know what the effect is called, so click the magnifying glass and search for Patch Replacer.
9. Drag the Patch Replacer effect directly onto the Patch node.
When you drag the effect onto the node, two ovals appear in the viewer. These can be changed to rectangles in the Inspector. Since we are trying to hide a clock, the oval is the way to go.
Left oval: Source patch. If you drag the oval around, it will sample what is under it in the viewer. This is the area that we will use to cover the clock.
Right oval: Target patch. What we want to mask out.
10. Move the Target patch over the clock and adjust the patch as needed to make sure that the clock is covered.
11. Move the source patch to a different area on the wall that closely matches the wall area around where the clock is located.
And there you have it! You can see your effect without the ovals by going to the tools icon in the bottom left corner of the viewer and clicking off the Open FX Overlay. But wait. This looks great on this particular frame of the video. What about the rest of the video? We need to add a tracker.
12. We need to see the clock again. We can do this by one of two ways:
Disable the Patch Replacer effect
Or…
Click the Keep Original Detail checkbox in the Inspector.
When we do, the clock is once again visible.
13. Click the Tracker tool to add a tracker.
14. We need to tell the Tracker that we want to track an effect. To do this, set the mode to FX in the upper-right corner of the Tracker palette.
15. We need to specify a tracking point. In the lower-left corner of the Tracker palette, click the Add Tacker button. When you do, blue crosshairs will appear in the viewer.
16. Drag the crosshairs to the edge of the clock. They should turn red (the crosshairs turn red when the default position is changed).
17. With the playhead at the beginning of the clip, click the Track Forward button. Resolve will analyze the clip.
18. If you turned on the Keep Original Detail checkbox, turn it off. If you disabled the Patch Replacer effect, enable it.
19. Play your video!
