The Frames per Second (fps) setting on your security digital video recorder (DVR) is one of the most important to manage properly. With a tweak that takes moments to complete, you can drastically improve the quality of your video or the amount of storage space on your system.

Firstly, video feeds are essentially a stream of still images linked together to give the illusion of motion. When a recorder has a high FPS record setting, it takes more photos each second to give the video a more fluid feel. Lower FPS settings cause the video feed to be jerky as the DVR is only capturing a few frames per second so it does not capture all of the motion on screen.

Example : If your recorder is set at 3 FPS, it is only going to capture one frame every 0.33 seconds so that person walking by may only be in the shot for one frame. If your recorder is set at 30fps, it will capture an image every 0.033 seconds. This will end up in a more fluid video file, but because there are more "images" captured, it will also lead to a much larger file that takes up more space in your hard drive.

With that said, video recorded at a lower frame rate will translate to smaller files and more overall space on your hard drive, but the trade off is that it will be at a lower quality and details may be missed.
