Video Transcript:

Hi, I'm Disability Lawyer David Brannen. In this video, we're gonna talk about the CPP disability program. I'm going to give you an overview of the program, and after this video, you'll have a better understanding of how the program works and if you may be eligible for benefits.

So the CPP disability program is a federal program that is part of the Canada Pension Plan. Now, as you may be familiar, the Canada Pension Plan is there to cover people who have paid into it. It will provide usually retirement payments, but it also provides other benefits, including CPP disability payments. Now, to be eligible for payments, you must meet the three criteria. That be age, contributions and disability.

So age is an easy one. You have to be between 18 and 65 years old to be qualified for benefits.

The second part is contributions. Basically, you need to have paid enough into the program in order to qualify.

Now, the third one is disability. You have to have a mental or physical disability that regularly stops you from doing any substantially gainful work.

So the key thing to keep in mind is that CPP disability is focused on your inability to work and whether disability is preventing you from working. Common mistake people make is they focus on their medical condition and the perceived seriousness of the medical condition. While the medical condition is important and will inform how they look at your case, it is not what is most important. What is most important is the disability arising from the medical condition.

So if you're approved for CPP disability, the payments to you will be somewhere between six hundred and fifty dollars or so right up until just under fourteen hundred dollars.

The second part of it is, is that if you have a child up to age 18 or if they're between 18 and 25 and still enrolled in school, they can qualify based on your disability. They could qualify to receive what's called the CPP disability Children's Payment. That payment will go to you until they're age 18. And then after 18, it would go to them. There's just one payment for the children's benefit and it's just over two hundred and fifty dollars a month per child.

Payments can last until age 65. Certainly they can stop before then if things happen that you no longer qualify for payments, but as long as you have a continuous disability, the payments will go to 65.

So there you have it. That is an overview of the CPP disability program. You now know basically how the program is set up and who can qualify for payments. Keep watching our other videos to learn more about the program and what it takes to win CPP disability.
