What is typecasting?
Type casting is when we assign data of one type to another type.
Why do we need typecasting?
Example 1:
Sometimes when we are doing calculations we might want to get rid of the decimal
points for example when we convert Fahrenheit to Celsius we might
let a lot of floating point numbers we can use type casting here to get
rid of them. (f-32)*5/9=c if f=34 we will get c=1.1111 but if we do
c=(int) 1.111 we get c=1;
Example 2:
if we are using the code written by someone else we can use type casting
to make it compatible with our code.
Example 3: if we have used a wrong datatype in our code we can again use
type casting to get the results in the proper data type instead of changing
all the data types in our code.
How many types of typecasting do we have?
There are two types of type casting.
1) Widening/automatic/implicit
2) Narrowing/manual/explicit
Widening/automatic/implicit:
in this type, we try to assign a value from a smaller data type to a larger
data type like from int to long. or from float to double or from short to
double.
2) Narrowing/manual/explicit:
In this type of casting, we try to assign values from bigger data types to
smaller data types like from int to byte or from double to float or from
long to byte.
How to type cast?
Widening/automatic/implicit
we don't need to do anything special simply
assign the values, and it will work for example
int largerBox=23455;
int extraLargeBox=largeBox;
Narrowing/manual/explicit:
In narrowing, we need to tell the java to which datatype we are trying to
convert it. For example double extraLargeBox=1222222.222222222222
float largeBox=(float)extraLargeBox;
