Why does it say Java is not recognized?

Your Java Deployment Toolkit could be blocked. You do not need the JDK browser extension, just the Java plugin.

How can I see what plugins I have?

If you have Firefox, go to Tools, Add-ons, Plugins. You can see the plugins that you do not need and can remove and prompt to update them, too.

The problem is Java, not the plug-ins.

If you ran a Java update and the plug-ins are not caught up, they may not recognize the Java version.

I do not think the issue is the plug-ins.

You could get the error if the computer can't find the Java files.

How do I fix that?

Check to see if Java is installed on your computer. A failed upgrade might remove the old version and fail to install the new one.

Yeah, altering browser settings and installing and reinstalling software should come first. It's easier somehow.

If you had to alter system variables, you'd have to go to System Properties, Advanced System Settings, Environment Variables. You'd have to find the Java path and then update the settings.

There are so many ways that could get messed up.

That's why that is last on the list. Don't forget to restart the computer after updating or upgrading Java -- or the browser or system variables.
