Spawning “practice” time!
The fish have been busy chasing one of the young females around this morning… I guess the milder weather has gotten them excited 😆. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ For anyone who hasn’t seen the early stages of spawning, this is what it typically looks like. The female is the paler of the yellow metallic fish. I don’t think this will actually end up in eggs laid. I see these ‘practice runs’ quite a lot on warmer winter days. It is a useful way to see which fish are most likely ready to breed later in the year as well as which are male or female. I always think it’s also a good indicator of the overall health of the fish and the pond in general. 🐟
