Compression hardware/plugins may be used for many different purposes. In general, compression is used to “control” or even out whatever you are working on. Compression brings the “loud stuff” down and the “quiet stuff” up. It is important to realize that compression can also squash or kill the energy in whatever you are working on. Some compression hardware/plugins can be used simply for the sound or the characteristics that the particular compressor gives. Understanding these basic principles of compression will allow you to achieve the desired results no matter what compressor hardware/plugin you may be using. The ratio, threshold, attack and release are available on basically all compressor hardware/plugins.
Threshold - Point at which the compressor will begin to compress whatever you are working on.
Ratio - Determines how much gain reduction is applied after threshold is hit.
Attack - How fast compressor reacts and compresses.
Release - How fast compressor releases the actual compression.
Compression really has no “rules” to get the desired result. The intended use and intended outcome is often based upon the Mixer’s ear. One compressor’s use on a singer’s vocal will be completely different on a rapper’s vocal. Using compression and sidechain compression, you can bring new life and new characteristics to your mixes. Listen to, and trust YOUR EARS FIRST when compressing.
