HTTP (HyperText Transfer Protocol) is used for transferring data over the web, but it is not secure. HTTPS (HTTP Secure) encrypts data using SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) or its modern successor, TLS (Transport Layer Security), making communication private and secure. While HTTP transmits data in plain text, HTTPS ensures it’s encrypted, preventing hackers from eavesdropping or tampering. SSL was the original protocol for encryption, but it’s outdated and replaced by TLS, which is more secure and efficient. Today, HTTPS with TLS is the standard for secure websites, especially those handling sensitive information like passwords or credit card details.
