In system programming (ISP) is the ability of the microcontroller to be programmed when installed in a complete system or development board.
This feature avoids the need to program the chip prior to its installation in the system or board.
Typically , chip supporting ISP having internal circuitry to support programming of the internal RAM , using communication with IDE via serial protocol.
Most programmable logic devices need either the JTAG protocol or the USB port for ISP
