Sometimes the end point of input data is not known. A sentinel value can be used to notify the program to stop acquiring input. If the input is from a user, the user could enter a specific value to stop collecting data for a running total. For example –1, where normal input is a positive number
Programs that get file input typically use the end-of-file marker (EOF) to stop acquiring input data.
