Lessons Learned From Code Scanning at Scale - Philippe Ombredanne, AboutCode
Accurate software origin and license detection is critical for license and security compliance, especially in this era of code-generating LLMs and governmental regulations like the European CRA.
AboutCode is running a massive license scan on the whole Software Heritage archive over 20 billion unique source code files from more than 300 million projects, and the indexing of all major package registries and linux distros. This will populate a massive commons reference database of open data about code to speed up future scanning and matching processes with accurate license information, and a massive collection of fingerprints to enable approximate code matching at scale.
In this talk, Philippe will share the caveats and lessons learned of code analysis at a huge scale, and how to leverage this open - and accurate - reference data to support best practices for better, faster and more efficient license and security compliance automation.
