When video games first came into existence, the manner in which games could save your progress was extremely limited. Some could simply not save anything at all, where others might at least be able to manage your previous high score. Eventually, though this desperate situation was revolutionized with a new concept: checkpoints.
Whether a simple text code seen in the earliest of games or the modern instant saves of today's games, checkpoints have allowed us to improve games tenfold. With checkpoints, developers are quickly able to save a player's progress in a level and transport them back to the checkpoint should the player, unfortunately, die during the level.
