In HTML, attributes are used to provide additional information about an element. They are used to modify the behaviour or appearance of an element and are specified within the opening tag of an element. Attributes consist of a name and a value, separated by an equals sign. Some common attributes in HTML include "class" to assign a class to an element for styling, "id" to assign a unique identifier to an element, "src" to specify the source of an image or media file, "href" to specify the link URL, and "alt" to provide alternative text for an image. Attributes can greatly enhance the functionality and accessibility of a website when used appropriately.
