Don't count dits and dahs. Use Morse Code learning tools that center on the sounds of the code. But, through all my interactions with cw ops, I've found the only difference between proficient ops and ops that struggle is those that latch onto the fixed mindset that they "learned incorrectly" and that is why they can never achieve their CW goals. Rubbish! You must abandon that belief. You can unlearn the visual dits and dahs and hear the sounds... I would be willing to bet 99% of the best cw ops in the world learned the exact same way you did. They just learned to abandon counting and embrace hearing the code through on-air operation. I find the fixed mindset of "the grand mistake I made" holds too many cw ops back.
