When to Pick Olives?
After the seed hardens, it begins to retain oil inside the olive. Olives are harvested when the highest amount of oil formation is completed. However, one should not wait long to harvest after the olive has finished collecting oil, that is, when the seed has hardened and the fruit has turned purple-black. The acidity of olives during harvest time increases and their quality decreases.
What are the Harvesting Methods?
Hand Harvesting: A cover is spread under the olive tree. Small stakes are driven into the edges of the olive harvest cover and the cover is raised above the ground. Thus, even if the olive falls to the ground while collecting it, it will not be injured.
Harvesting with a Pole: Olives are made to fall by hitting the branches with a pole. Harvesting can be done by picking with poles to reach the olives on high branches. However, picking with poles may damage new shoots and reduce the amount of olives for the next year. Additionally, olives dropped with a pole may be injured and begin to spoil.
Harvesting with Scraper Combs: Olive harvest can be carried out by using scraper combs that allow reaching high branches.
Harvesting with a Beating Machine: In this mechanical olive harvesting method, flexible materials at the end of the machine hit the olive branches. The machine continuously claps and spins the tree.
Harvesting with Trunk Shaker Machine: Trunk shaker machine vibrates the trunk of the tree, causing the branches to shake.
