. . . . A fantastic explanation of why Java hogs memory. Everything you wanted to know, everything you've guessed, and things that will give you nightmares :) Most importantly, we've covered the tools you can use to see and measure memory consumption.

Does the JVM parameter -Xmx4G mean that a process will take up no more than 4 gigabytes of system memory? Of course not. What else will use virtual memory, and most importantly, how much? This question becomes especially relevant when sharing resources between multiple processes or when running Java in a container.

Besides the virtual machine itself, libraries and user applications are also memory-hungry. While Java object leaks are usually easy to detect from a heap dump, native memory leaks can be perplexing.

In this talk, we'll examine which virtual machine structures consume RAM and how to monitor and manage its consumption. We'll explore various virtual memory management strategies and discover changes in new JDK versions. We'll also look at real-world examples of native memory leaks and learn about allocation analysis tools.
