Unity supports a feature to recompile and continue your game after making changes to your code that just get picked up without having stopped your game. But also no project I've written or worked on have been able to support it, because traditional approaches to architecture in code dive into areas unity does not support (and probably shouldn't).
This is a discussion so any developers with an interest can chime in and help design and develop approaches or identify limits in this theory; that we can create games larger games/apps that can "recompile and continue playing". That we can design, and program without interruption.
