In this Unity tutorial, we build a Level Selection Screen from scratch using Unity’s Scroll View UI system. This video continues from the previous UI tutorials and focuses on creating a clean, scalable, and user-friendly level selector for level-based games.
We start by discussing common approaches to level selection, including manual layouts versus scroll-based layouts. Instead of reinventing the wheel with masks, grids, and custom scrolling logic, we use Unity’s built-in Scroll View, which already includes a viewport, content area, and optional scrollbars.
You’ll learn how to:
Create a Scroll View from the Unity UI menu
Configure horizontal scrolling for level buttons
Resize and center the Scroll View properly
Disable unwanted vertical scrollbars
Adjust mouse wheel sensitivity for smoother scrolling
Add buttons dynamically inside the Scroll View content
Use Horizontal Layout Group and Content Size Fitter for automatic alignment
Duplicate buttons quickly for testing
Organize everything inside a dedicated Level Selection Canvas
We also improve the visual presentation by:
Adding a background image behind the level selection UI
Reusing UI elements from the Level End screen
Creating a clear “Select Level” heading
Renaming and restructuring UI elements for clarity
Adjusting spacing, alignment, and blending for a polished look
Towards the end, we prepare the system for runtime population, meaning the level buttons will later be created automatically based on available levels instead of being placed manually.
By the end of this video, you’ll have:
A working horizontal level selection scroll view
Clean and organized UI hierarchy
A scalable foundation for dynamic level loading
A UI that’s ready to be wired with PlayerPrefs and game logic
👉 In the next tutorial, we’ll dynamically populate level buttons at runtime and connect them to actual gameplay.
