Subsurface Scattering is the effect of light passing through semi-transparent objects such as the skin or the leaves of trees. In terms of rendering time it's conceived as "hungry" or "costly". A typical rendering with a standard surface might take 10 seconds. With a subsurface scattering material it might take 10 minutes. For an eight second = 200 frames animation the difference would be 33 minutes to 33 hours, or: a cuppa tea with scones vs. a whole day, a whole night + half a day.
