Subsurface Scattering is the effect of light passing through semi-transparent objects such as the skin or the leaves of trees. In terms of rendering time it's conceived as "hungry" or "costly". A typical rendering with a standard surface might take 10 seconds. With a subsurface scattering material it might take 10 minutes. For an eight second = 200 frames animation the difference would be 33 minutes to 33 hours, or: a cuppa tea with scones vs. a whole day, a whole night + half a day.
The music: “Computer Animation” and "3 Acoustics B", composed and performed by me, Maximilian Schönherr, licensed via GEMA, Germany. I composed the 3 guitar piece using iZotope Spire.
